Today was a great day, they got a nice 2 veggie course with celery and carrot: two of their favorites. 

Honey believes you must run away with your food. The fastest I've ever seen Honey run was to get away with a large piece of pepper that she didn't feel like sharing with Rocky. Honey has taken a whole stalk of celery and tried to take it into a pigloo, unfortunately, it didn't fit too well.

      Whee Piggies are home from our stay with the lovely Claire. She is our favorite piggy friend! While we were gone, the cavy slaves had an idea!

Got Vitamin C?

One of the most common things for guinea pig owners not to know is how important vitamin C really is. Guinea pigs require quite a lot of it, and there is no limit to how much they have. The first thing that passed into our minds was ORANGES! The problem with oranges is that they have too much sugar for it to be good for them. They can have 1-2 pieces of a mandarin oranges every 4 days. Otherwise, they can easily upset piggies stomach.  Options are everywhere for getting vitamin C for your guinea pigs. One thing out there is Daily C which are tablets that can be fed by crushing over wet greens, mixed with water and fed through a syringe, or apparently some guinea pigs will just eat the pill. Not our piggies! We cannot find a way to give it to our guinea pigs where they will eat it.

We gave them arugula (wetted) and sprinkled this over the top and they won't eat it. But apparently some pigs love the taste, maybe yours will? Another idea of how to give it to them is to put it in their water but there are 2 problems with that:

1. You don't know how much vitamin C each piggy is getting.

2. If a piggy really objects to the taste, they may stop drinking water which can lead to dehydration, or more severely, death.

Please make sure that your piggies are receiving vitamin C, here is a list of food for guinea pigs that are high in vitamin C.

Corn Season is Finally Here!

Corn Season is finally here! You should know that one of our very favorite foods for you to eat is corn. When you husk the corn, you can give as the inner leaves if they are clean and healthy. That is our favorite part of corn. But if you buy already husked corn, the story is a little bit different.


The parts guinea pigs can eat are:

The Husk:
The Husk, the outer green part you pull off corn, is delicious for us guinea pigs, but only the inner leaves (if they are clean)

The Silk:
The Silk is the little strands that are all over the corn. These can be eaten if they are caught on to something, but they are not our favorite.

The Corn:
The Corn is good if you like corn, but not so good if you don't. Not all guinea pigs think it tastes all that great. But many guide lines apply when supplying corn:

• You have not eaten the corn right off the cob
• You have cut the corn off the cob to eat it
• Other Animals have not touched the corn
• The corn is clean
• The husk is not still on the corn
• The husk has been removed
• Guinea pigs can not have outer leaves of husk
• Guinea Pigs can have inner leaves of husk

Can we eat grass?

The answer is yes!

Grass is my favorite food because we rarely get to do it and when we do, no limit applies with the amount of grass that we can have. Just follow these simple guide lines:

• Make sure no pesticides have been put on the grass recently
• No dog or any other has peed on the grass
• Nothing other than grass, clover, and dandelions are within reach of the guinea pigs
• The guinea pigs are safe from feet that could step on them
• The guinea pigs have some place to hide
• Make sure it is no warmer than 78 F.
• Make sure it is no colder than 65 F.
• You are ALWAYS watching them in less they have a playpen that is covered (birds could get them)
